Minimalist, functional yet so stylish – Scandinavian furniture has become popular the world over (thanks in part to one very famous brand).
For many furniture designers, releasing new and exciting creations and constantly re-inventing their product line is integral to success.
Not so for globally-celebrated Danish furniture house, JL Møller Møbelfabrik. They still sell some of the same designs as when the factory opened in Aarhus in 1944.
According to Jorgen Møller (above), who had been running the factory for the past 30 years: “If you buy a side chair from 1950, and you want to make an armchair to it, 60 or 70 years later, you can do that.”
The Møller family was recently in Australia to introduce the new CEO, 27-year-old Kirsten Møller. As the granddaughter of founder Niels Otto Møller and daughter of Jorgen, she becomes the youngest family member, and the first female, to take over the company.
“We have always been a family-run business, based on a simple design philosophy that marries comfort with style and showcases the natural qualities of our materials,” Kirsten says. “As the third generation to lead the business, I look forward to growing the Møller brand internationally and continuing what my grandparents, uncle and father have worked so hard to achieve.”
Kirsten (above) has been working in the factory for two years and recently launched her first product – the #77 stool. It’s the first family-designed piece of furniture since 1982.
Similar to all Møller chairs and benches, the seat is woven by hand from one continuous 425-foot long piece of cord.
In this fast-paced world, JL Møller Møbelfabrik pride themselves on creating products that are traditional, well-made and carefully hand finished – just like they did when the factory was first opened.
According to Kirsten: “We use the same manufacturing techniques that we used then, and it’s just a well-oiled machine. We just produce these chairs because that’s just something we’ve always done.”
